This is a festival that showcases a wide range of traditional culture and performing arts such as concerts in the city centre as well as hosting full-scale outdoor performances by utilising the local cultural resources of the Tama region including Hachioji City. It was designated as part of “the Tokyo 2020 Cultural Olympiad” to help generate excitement around the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2019, an impressive series of productions such as performances of Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo pupettry, Satsuma-style Sekkyo-bushi and Hachioji Geigi-shu as well as programmes including musical chants, folk songs and dances, performances of a variety of Japanese musical styles from the Tama region and koto performances by local high school students were carried out at venues such as Nishihoshasen You road, Misakicho Park, Nakacho Park and Yokoyamacho Park near the north exit of JR Hachioji Station.Around 36,000 people enjoyed the event over the two-day period. In 2020, it was cancelled due to COVID-19. In 2021, the event was made part of “the Tokyo 2020 NIPPON Festival Co-organised Programme”, but a decision was made not to hold the event in front of an audience due to COVID-19, and instead the event was streamed online. A musical performance combining Noh theatre and monastic chanting by the monks of Takao-san Yakuo-in Temple, a dance performance staged with traditional dyed fabric of Hachioji, and traditional performing arts rooted in the Tama region was put on.
