This is a project that has been carried out since 2008 with the aim of bolstering the cultural appeal of Tokyo. Leading performers of traditional arts provide in-person, regular and ongoing classes to children as a way to ensure that these traditional arts can be passed on to the next generation. The project provides a learning environment in which children can naturally absorb the appropriate etiquette as well as experience other aspects of the carefully cultivated environment of the world of traditional performing arts. By fostering a uniquely Japanese artistic awareness and sensitivity through a genuine traditional performing arts experience, the project aims to increase interest in traditional performing arts, not only among children but also among families. In 2020, leading performers spent over five months schooling 192 elementary, junior high school and high school students in the four aspects of Nohgaku (noh chanting, dancing and kyogen), traditional Japanese dance, sankyoku (koto and shakuhachi) and nagauta music (shamisen, shinobue and kotsuzumi), and the results were presented on traditional stages such as the National Theatre and the Hosho Noh Theatre, while a special show featuring performances by the instructors was also held. Additionally, a specialised youth programme was conducted for junior high and high school students on traditional Japanese dance, koto and shamisen.
