“Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life.” So says the Olympic Charter, a codification of the purpose and spirit of the Olympic Games, which goes on to explicitly demand that a “programme of cultural events” be organised. In response, Tokyo, the host city of the Tokyo 2020 Games, rolled out a series of diverse cultural programmes under the title of Tokyo Tokyo FESTI-VAL, which was successfully brought to a close in September 2021.The festival attracted numerous participants with a wide range of revolutionary events and hospitable projects, building excitement for Tokyo 2020 from a cultural approach and helping participants connect with one another and deepen their love for local communities. Despite facing a range of restrictions amid the COVID-19 crisis, including having to limit the number of participants, we reaffirmed the importance of collaboration and successfully strengthened our bonds with the wider world.COVID-19 evolved into a pandemic that was described by António GUTERRES, Secretary-General of the United Nations, as the greatest challenge since World War II. The success of Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL thus served as a testament to our ability to “create a way of life” even amid the pandemic, which has encouraged us immensely.Along with all people of planet Earth, as I look back on the festival, I would like to express my sincere hope that world peace will be achieved and sustained. オリンピック競技大会を開催する目的と精神を記す「オリンピック憲章」に「オリンピズムはスポーツを文化、教育と融合させ、生き方の創造を探求するもの」とあり、「複数の文化イベントのプログラムを計画しなければならない」と明記されています。これを受けて、東京2020大会の開催都市東京は、「Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL」と題して2021年９月まで多彩な文化プログラムを開催しました。 斬新で独創的な企画や、より多くの人々が参加できる親しみやすい事業などを幅広く実施し、大会を文化の面から盛り上げるだけでなく、参加した人々の絆を深め、地域への愛着をより大きく育てました。コロナ禍にあって、参加人数の制限など様々な制約がありましたが、このフェスティバルを通じて私たちは連携の大切さを改めて確認し、世界とのつながりをさらに深めることができました。 アントニオ・グテーレス国連事務総長が「第二次世界大戦以来、最大の試練」と指摘した新型コロナウイルスは、まさにパンデミックと化していますが、Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVALの実施によってパンデミックの中にあっても新たな生き方の創造を探求することができたということは、私たちに大きな勇気を与えてくれたのではないでしょうか。Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVALを今一度振り返ることによって、地球という惑星に住むすべての人々とともに世界の平和の実現と永続を心から願いたいと思います。提供：多摩美術大学Aoyagi Masanori007東京芸術文化評議会会長／Chairman of Tokyo Arts and Culture Committee青柳 正規
