This is a programme to provide bite-sized opportunities for foreigners to experience and understand traditional culture and performing arts at tourist hubs etc. in order to promote traditional Japanese culture and Tokyo’s unique performing arts both at home and abroad.The project was launched in 2015. In 2019, a programme was implemented that combined viewings of demonstrations, including of paper cutting and Japanese magic tricks, along with hands-on experiences. The latter included traditional Japanese dance while wearing yukata, playing nagauta on the Shamisen, dressing up in kimono and trying Edo Sashimono, Japanese flower arrangement, Shishimai (Lion Dance) and Kasa-Mawashi (traditional Japanese umbrella spinning acrobatics), and Edo woodblock printmaking. The programme was held at the Edo-Tokyo Museum, Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Centre, Hama-rikyu Gardens, and TAKAO 599 MUSEUM throughout the year. The total number of visitors in 2019 was 17,832. Counting non-participatory audience members, the number exceeded 30,000, with many people simply enjoying the traditional Japanese culture and entertainment.
