In the autumn of 2018, as part of the "FUROSHIKI PARIS" campaign, the city of Tokyo presented a giant wrapping cloth in the square in front of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris and highlighted the appeal of furoshiki through exhibitions, installations and workshops. In 2019, FUROSHIKI TOKYO was held to reflect on the success of "FUROSHIKI PARIS". At Roppongi Art Night, a furoshiki pavilion with arabesque patterns was set up and a furoshiki installation was also set up presenting original furoshiki designed by Japanese and French artists that were displayed in Paris were exhibited in Japan for the first time. Then, at the Edo-Tokyo Museum and Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, an original furoshiki exhibition was held along with a furoshiki installation and workshop for the Edo-era kabuki play “Sukeroku” exhibition. Also, in the Nihombashi area, a furoshiki exhibition and talk show-style event were held in collaboration with the noren exhibition in front of Nihombashi Mitsukoshi. In addition, furoshiki decorations were installed on the lion statues at the Mitsukoshi Department Store and a Nihombashi monument was created using AR. Through these FUROSHIKI TOKYO exhibitions, we were able to showcase the appeal of furoshiki, “a versatile cloth that is used for a variety of purposes” and serves as an iconic representation of the wisdom and aesthetic sensibilities of the Japanese people, as well as the general appeal of art and culture.
