A programme from the Tokyo Festival 2020 called “The Dark Master VR” written and directed by TANINO Kuro provided a new theatre experience using virtual reality (VR) to break down the barrier that separates the performers and the audience. This story originally from a manga comic book involves a main character who dines at a Western-style restaurant and finds the owner of the restaurant coming and pushing an earpiece into his ear, after which the main character starts following the directions given by the owner as heard through the earpiece. The theatre performance was an experimental programme where the audience is given an earpiece, from which they can hear the same restaurant owner’s voice as the main character on stage, thus giving the audience a pseudo-realistic feeling as if they were having the same experience as the main character. This experimental programme had to evolve further, as the theatre was figuring out how to play under the COVID-19 circumstance. The format was changed to have the visitor wear a VR headset and enter a single-person booth, which enabled the visitor to see the theatre from the perspective of the main character, hear the voices, and experience the illusion of becoming synchronised with the characters on stage. This was the birth of an innovative work that breaks down the preconceived notion of theatres. While exhibitions, performances, and events are being cancelled or suspended, the city of Tokyo hosted the “Support Program for Arts and Culture” to keep the cultural flame alive. A special website was developed that provides free video streaming of works and performances by artists and creators. This project not only gave support to the artists for their activities, but also led to providing a great many people with the opportunity to come in touch with art. Among the different programmes at the Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL that was impacted by the spread of COVID-19, many were forced to significantly change the format of their programme.Even so, the creativity exhibited and the efforts made by the artists and staff helped pave a way for new possibilities. The festival brought out scientific approaches, the spirit of devotion to art, the curiosity of children, the bridging of both psychological and physical distance by forging online connections, and creativity… The trajectory that paved the way for a new path was able to surmount the difficulties that emerged against society, and is now bequeathed to the next generation as an invaluable legacy that could lead the way toward the future of art and culture for Tokyo.VR theatre experience in a special boothEach person would go into a separate booth affixed with a mirror and put on a VR headset. The atmosphere in the booth was designed to take the audience into a world of virtual reality. 134
