建築家Architect妹島 和世 氏Sejima KazuyoI was invited to participate in PAVILION TOKYO 2021, which aimed to create opportunities for people to connect with the city of Tokyo.The Hama-rikyu Garden was selected as the location for the installation, as it is a site where interactions with the historical aspects of the Edo period and the modern aspects of Tokyo are possible. Even though Hama-rikyu is surrounded by skyscrapers, stepping inside the garden instantly connects you to a distant past. This combined beauty of Edo with modernity shows us that today’s Tokyo is also a continuity of history. Moreover, the garden itself is very charming and elements such as ponds of seawater, meandering streams, or duck fields, make the area quiet yet dynamic. Inspired by this environment, I came up with the idea of adding a new watercourse to the landscape with the project “Suimei”.At first, I tried to create a water stream with a quiet and plain reflecting surface, almost to not distinguish whether the water is in movement or not. However, I found that in nature forming a gradient by calculation is almost impossible, and also with strong wind, or birds and insects coming into the water while installing the slopes, I realised we are not able to control the water stream. Then, I started putting small pots of flowers inside the watercourse. Depending on the position of the pots, the speed of water flow and where it flows change, allowing me to understand the interactive relationship between objects, water, wind, and gravity. It taught me the nature of flow of water and I found it interesting.Through this experience, I reaffirmed that interacting with different forms of art in Tokyo can allow one to see and enjoy the city in various ways.© Aiko Suzuki 人々が東京の街に触れる機会を作る、というパビリオン・トウキョウ2021に参加させていただきました。 東京の江戸的な側面と現代的な側面二つに触れられたらいいなあと思い、浜離宮を敷地にしました。浜離宮は周りを超高層のオフィスビル群に囲まれながら、そこに一歩足を踏み入れると、昔までつながる遠い時間を感じさせます。江戸と現代の二つが一緒に美しく現れ、私たちに、今の東京も歴史の延長線上にあるということを自然に教えてくれます。そして庭園自体がとても魅力的です。広大な庭の中には曲水や鴨場とともに、海からの水も流れており、静かでありながらとてもダイナミックです。そこで、この浜離宮にもう一つ新しい水の流れを加えられないかと思い、「水明」というプロジェクトを始めました。 はじめは流れているかどうかわからないような、ただ静かに反射している面を作ろうとしましたが、自然の中では計算どおりの勾配を作ることはほとんど不可能であり、風が強く吹いたり、設営中に鳥や虫が来て、コントロールしきれるものでないことを知りました。そこで、花の鉢を置いてみました。鉢の置き方で水の速度や流れが変わり、物と水、風と重力のインタラクティブな関係がわかってきて、水の流れの面白さ、本質を教えられました。 実際の東京の街の中でいろいろな形でアートに出会えたら、街での経験が多様になるなあということをあらためて実感しました。Suimei145水明
