1"Butoh" is a performing art that started in Japan in the 1960s and has since spread worldwide. This dance festival, which put the spotlight on Tokyo’s underground "butoh" culture, as well as underground spaces, featured performances and exhibitions that were carried out over the course of approximately five months. The performance programme consisted of new and topical works inspired by butoh, and performed by artists active in Japan and overseas such as Eiko OTAKE, KAWAGUCHI Takao and ITOH Kim.They were filmed without an audience at the Former Hakubutsukan Dobutsuen Station and other underground spaces and streamed online. Moving beyond the "butoh" stereotypes of white-painted bodies and slow movements, this festival brought together performances and discussions across genres such as dance, music and visual expression to appeal to a wider demographic. So that works could be viewed while avoiding crowds, the exhibition programme featured events such as a photo exhibition by William KLEIN in an underground passage at Ginza Station, as well as online exhibitions and a new walking AR(augmented reality) experience that used actual streets as an exhibition space.
