The Speed of Light is a theatre project set in the city of Tokyo created by the Argentine theatre and video artist Marco CANALE with senior citizens living in Tokyo . The performers comprised of a group of 12 men and women over the age of 65 who were brought together by an open call for participants. During its production, Marco, who has a background encompassing different cultures and histories, spent time in Tokyo to research the history and culture of the area in order to answer questions such as, “How did today’s senior citizens of Tokyo live in the past?” and “How do they view Tokyo?” Through ongoing conversations with the performers, he elaborated a fictional story where past, present and future intersect based on their testimonies about the land and their personal histories (memories). The performances were held in the form of a tour, taking place in multiple locations such as the Taishido Hachiman Shrine and the surrounding parks in Setagaya City, with the audience guided to each new location by the performers.
