Japan’s leading artists showcased music, performances and installations in the spring and summer seasons. Originally, an interactive festival using the entire Sumida River was planned, however due to COVID-19, the number of programmes were reduced and the content switched primarily to online. In the spring season, the HASUNUMA Shuta Philharmonic Orchestra and total of 18 guest musicians performed a live night-time concert at the Hama-rikyu Gardens after closing hours, a group of “verbal” artists led by ITO Seiko, a pioneer of Japanese hip hop culture, gave a performance in a skatepark and a live show was performed by WADA Ei using old electrical appliances that had been repurposed as musical instruments, all of which were live streamed online. In the summer season, a sound installation based on TAKAGI Masakatsu’s piano collection entitled “Marginalia” and an installation titled “water state 1” based on the theme of water by SAKAMOTO Ryuichi and TAKATANI Shiro were exhibited.
