TOKYO SENTO Festival 2020 is a project designed to create everyday opportunities to interact with art and artists from various genres such as manga, contemporary art and art brut using the sento (public bathhouse), an important part of Japanese culture. Four sento in Tokyo served as the main venues. However the most common subject of sento mural art is a depiction of Mt. Fuji, manga artist YAMAZAKI Mari, creator of the popular manga, “Thermae Romae,” drew a scene of an ancient Olympic Games titled, “Ancient Balaneion no Yu” at “Hachiman-yu” in Shibuya City. At “Benten-yu” in Musashino City, OTSUKA Ichio, art director of the NHK Educational TV children’s programme “Mi-i-tsuketa!” created an energising space for both children and adults using popular characters from the show such as Ofuroski. At “Hagino-yu” in Taito City, AOKI Takeru and HOSHI Kiyomi painted art brut art works and at “Konparu-yu” in Chuo City, graphic designer OHARA Daijiro used projection mapping to create a unique piece of “moving” graphic sento art. Furthermore, “special fabric curtains called noren” designed by YAMAZAKI Mari were put on display and a “stamp rally” in which visitors could receive a special towel were carried out at approximately 500 sento throughout Tokyo.
