PAVILION TOKYO 2021 is a project where Japanese architects and artists active around the world designed pavilions to introduce futuristic art and architecture. In addition to installing the buildings and sculptures designed by participating creators AIDA Makoto, ISHIGAMI Junya, KUSAMA Yayoi, SEJIMA Kazuyo, HIRATA Akihisa, FUJIMOTO Sou, FUJIMORI Terunobu and FUJIWARA Teppei in 10 locations throughout Tokyo, media art produced by additional creator MANABE Daito + Rhizomatiks was displayed, and new city landscapes were proposed. For the venues, historic spaces that symbolise tradition such as the Hama-rikyu Gardens (site of Enryo-kan) and Ginkgo Avenue in Meiji Jingu Gaien, new landscapes that symbolise the present and future, such as in front of the National Stadium and Takanawa Gateway Station and in front of the United Nations University, a symbol of diversity, were selected by the creators. Over the course of the event’s 67 days, spectators were able to walk around the sites contemplating the pavilions that contained their creators’ wishes for the future of Tokyo.
