The Constant Gardeners is a new installation by a British art studio that uniquely combines robotics, Japanese garden culture and sports. The installation consists of four robot arms acting as “gardeners” to create illustrations, with ripple marks representing the analysed movements of athletes from sporting competitions on a giant gravel canvas. The installation was inspired by the beauty and artistry of traditional Zen gardens and the movements of athletes who exhibit outstanding performances in their respective fields. During the event, the robot arms operated daily to create approximately 150 patterns of creative works, such as movements that changed over time and depictions of momentary movements. Industrial robot arms that were originally used in car manufacturing plants were used. It was an exhibition that conveyed the new possibilities of robotics by using robots that had fulfilled their original duty and repurposing them for a different field. An installation incorporating the latest technology that suddenly appeared in plain sight.
