Dance recital in Kunitachi City ©UEDA YouichiADD Kunitachi City Workshop ©UEDA YouichiADD Minato City Workshop ©SATO MikiAfter-school Diversity Dance was a process-oriented project in which children were exposed to a variety of dances related to various local cultures, guided by professional dancers who are active on the front lines of their respective genres. After experiencing and thinking about cultural diversity, the children then created and presented their own dance works. The children who learned a wide variety of dances by the instructors were mainly people who live in the area where the programme was held and are engaged in various dances, from street dance to traditional dances from Japan and abroad, in a workshop format, and then challenged themselves to choreograph and create dances based on these experiences in the three areas of Minato City, Kunitachi City and Hinode Town in Tokyo. In addition, professional dancers who are active on the front lines of their respective genres including classical Japanese dance performer ONOE Kikunojo and dancers and choreographers JAREO Osamu and SUGAWARA Koharu were invited to guide the children. The children were inspired by the concept of “creating” a dance rather than simply learning a certain pattern, and encountered a variety of dances rooted in the neighbourhood where they live and the people who sustain the culture. They also experienced diversity by interacting with various cultures.
