This is a comprehensive urban performing arts festival geared towards a wide-ranging audience that has been held every autumn since 2016 in and around Ikebukuro, a Tokyo district with various cultural characteristics. Its aim is to connect with the wider world through Tokyo’s rich and diverse arts and culture scene. Since 2018, the Tokyo Festival has been developed in collaboration between “the Planning Team”, comprising the directors of each of the seven programmes, and general director MIYAGI Satoshi. A wide range of programmes have been carried out including “the Directly Managed Programme” featuring theatre acts that have attracted attention both within Japan and abroad as well as outdoor plays broadly accessible to the general public. Other programmes include the “Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Autumn Selection”, a cosmopolitan programme performed at the venue of the same name; a series introducing Asian performing arts; “Festival/Tokyo”, which presented a wide and exciting range of contemporary stage performances in the city; and “the Toshima International City of Arts & Culture Programme”, which featured community-based folk entertainment and traditional performing arts.
